Postcard from QVARTZ: Helping immigrants and refugees in Texas
Over the last six months, the two of us have had the pleasure of getting to know RAICES and a lot of its incredible people. RAICES is a non-profit agency offering free or low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees, and has grown to become the largest immigration legal services provider in Texas. RAICES offers a broad spectrum of services but the largest program is the Children's Program, which provides free legal information, referrals and direct representation for unaccompanied children in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
This spring, we have spent eight weeks in Texas working with the RAICES offices in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. In San Antonio, we got the chance to follow some of the agency's attorneys to the visitation room at the Karnes Detention Center. Here, the attorneys help their clients prepare for their "credible and reasonable fear interviews" where it is decided whether they are allowed to proceed with a full hearing – or will face deportation from the U.S. Read more about RAICES and all the important work they do here
We look forward to continuing the journey with RAICES on this meaningful cause.
